Project records, 1969-1982.

Correspondence, reports, research and interview notes, statistical data, chapter drafts, and other related material created by the Minnesota Ethnic History Project (MEHP). The project operated under the auspices of the Minnesota Historical Society from 1973 to 1981 and culminated in the publication of the book "They Chose Minnesota: A Survey of the State's Ethnic Groups." Records include administrative records documenting the organization, coordination, and funding of the project, as well as research records consisting of the actual data gathered in the process of writing the book. Administrative records include employment contracts, correspondence from and concerning the original project director, Carlton C. Qualey, monthly reports, and files kept by project administrators June Drenning Holmquist (the book's editor) and Deborah L. (Stultz) Miller (research coordinator) containing correspondence with researchers and chapter authors concerning the writing and editing process. Research records form the bulk of the collection and include census and other statistical data, indexes to ethnic information in various sources, copies of relevant papers and articles, newspaper clippings, research notes, chapter drafts, and other miscellaneous materials gathered and created by the various researchers and writers involved in the project. The collection includes a great deal of data extracted from federal censuses to reveal the ethnic composition of the state over the years. A highlight, as well as the largest portion of the collection, are the series of research files on each ethnic group defined and chronicled in "They Chose Minnesota." In addition to the types of materials listed above, many of these files, particularly the Asian materials, also contain interview notes, some of which are based on more in-depth oral histories that were done at the time.
